The Benefits Of A Spring Wedding
If you’ve just got engaged – congratulations! But once the initial excitement subsides, the serious planning kicks in. One early decision you’ll have to make, along with your choice of venue, is your wedding date. And, clearly, time of year will have quite an impact on how you organise your celebration.
In the UK, summer tends to be peak wedding season. According to industry website Hitched, four of the five most popular dates for tying the knot in 2024 fell between May and August – although intriguingly, and perhaps bewilderingly, last year’s favourite wedding day was actually Monday 23 September, on which more than 4,500 nuptials were held.
So it’s fair to say that spring isn’t typically one of the UK’s most favoured seasons for tying the knot. Yet there are more benefits to saying ‘I do’ at this time of year than you may have realised. After all, for a start-off it’s a time for new beginnings, so what better point in the year to start out as a married couple?
Read on to learn some other advantages:
1. The weather
Yes, the weather can be unpredictable – but that’s true all year round. Autumn can be chilly and winter is obviously very cold and so needs planning in a completely different way. Summer weddings can be idyllic, but heatwaves (which are increasing in the UK) can make these celebrations very uncomfortable, especially if you plan on spending at least some of the day outside.
But in the spring you can look forward to mild yet sunny weather with a decent amount of daylight. You (and your guests) won’t be shivering if you’re sporting an off-the-shoulder number, or sweltering in the midday heat. And it may well still be possible to enjoy being outdoors for part of your wedding if you say ‘I do’ between March and early May.
2. Greater availability all round
That goes for the venue, which should have fewer bookings in the spring, as well as your suppliers, who often find themselves less in demand at this time of year.
More of the people you want to celebrate with you should be free, too, assuming you avoid Easter and half-term breaks. (One possible drawback of marrying later in the warmer months is that some of your guests could be away on their summer holidays.)
3. Full bloom ahead
There’s new life during the springtime in the form of gorgeous flowers, trees and plants. So gardens and grounds are full of colour and freshness. Draw on and replicate the colours for your styling, in terms of décor, floral arrangements and even bridesmaids’ dresses, with shades including pastel greens, pinks, yellows, peaches and purples.
Your bouquet could be a simple white and green, creating a look of understated simplicity that can make an impactful statement. But whatever you go for, there’s always something wonderful about spring flowers.
4. Strike a great deal
You’d be surprised at how much you can haggle when it comes to agreeing prices for your wedding. Out of season, suppliers and even the venue itself may be able to offer you a better deal than during the peak marriage months.
5. Golden hour
Photographers talk about the ‘golden hour’ for shooting the most striking images. It’s the point just before the sun sets or after it rises, when the light is redder and softer than normal, lending pictures a special quality. In the summer, this moment can happen much later in the day, by which time guests may have got stuck into the celebrations, making organising photoshoots trickier. So, during the spring, you may have a better opportunity to create lasting memories.
